Now you might wonder “Why on earth would I want search engines not to index a page on my site?” That’s a good question!

In short, you don’t want to index your admin pages or some confidential pages, like downloads. Every page that exists on your site should be counted as a separate page for search result purposes.

Note: It’s very important to use only a plain text editor, and not something like Word or WordPad. It may add some codes in the background which may conflict with the bots

WordPress bloggers can optimize their robots.txt files by using reliable a wordpress plugin like Yoast’s SEO plugin.

16. SEO tags

SEO and SEO tags and attributes can impact on your indexation by google and other search engines. By far many people just keep their focus on SEO title and descriptions but don’t even thinks about SEO tags and attributes like do-follow, nofollow, index, noindex and others.

How To Optimize WordPress Robots.txt File for SEO

If you’ve ever wondered:

“what is a robots.txt file?”
“Do you need a robots.txt file?”
“How do I Optimize WordPress Robots.txt File for SEO?”
“what is the Importance robots.txt ?”

Recently one of our readers asked us if they need to have a robots.txt file and what importance does it have on SEO. So we have created a step-by-step guide that will show you EXACTLY how to optimize robots.txt file for seo.

So what is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt is your anti-sitemap and instead of telling Google about your blog contents you want the bots to index, the Robots.txt file stops them and tells them what pages of your site that you don’t want to index, and show on search results.

Robots.txt plays a major role in SEO and search engine ranking but if you configure the robots.txt file in a wrong way your presence from search engines may completely be wiped.

SEO is a vast in itself and it has lot of elements in it and robots.txt is one of them.

Here is the breakdown of the contents:

Do You Need a Robots.txt File?

Robots.txt file puts a stop on the search bots to index your website’s particular areas. This doesn’t mean it is a bad thing. Actually an absence of robots.txt file will not stop search engines from crawling and indexing your website.

Robots.txt file protects your confidential files, admin folders and other files and folders that you don’t want to show up on search results and also tells them which file to crawl as Robots.txt file is the first file that is crawled by bots.

If you submit your XML sitemaps on search engines, then the bots know where to look for your contents and crawl it unless you have specified it in Webmasters Tools.

We highly recommend you to create a robots.txt file immediately if you dont have any.

Where is the Robots.txt file in my website?

Robots.txt file is usually found in your site’s root folder, if its not there then you need to create one.

In WordPress it resides in the root directory.

SmartActiveBlogger also runs on WordPress and out robots.txt file is located in the root directory – https://www.smartactiveblogger.com/robots.txt

How to Create a Robots.txt file for my website?

You can create robots using your cPanel, Hosting File Manager or with an FTP Client. We will use FTP Client to create the Robots.txt file. The process is same for cPanel, you just need to Login to your account.

First we need to connect the FTP Client with our WordPress directory, or login to our cPanel and navigate to File Manager.

Use a notepad and create an ordinary text file and name it robots.txt. Next simply upload it to your site’s root directory. If you already have a robots.txt file then you don’t need to create a new one.

How to Use Robots.txt file?

If this is your first time to robots.txt then it may feel little scary, but don’t worry. We have created this guide for you keeping in mind that you are completely new to robots.txt

The format of robots.txt is pretty simple, the text “user-agent” is actually the name of the bot that you are trying to instruct. For example, Googlebot or Bingbot. You can use asterisk * to instruct all bots.

The next line follows with “Allow or Disallow” command, so the search bots know either it should follow the mentioned directory or not.

If set to Allow, the search bots will crawl and index the ones and if Disallow, it will ignore and won’t index the directory and its contents.

See how a sample robots.txt file looks like

In this sample robots.txt, the * means all bots are instructed the below commands, and Allow: /wp-contents/uploads/ means the contents inside the upload folder will be index by the bot.

In the next two lines, we have disallowed 1 directory and 1 file.

Optimizing Your Robots.txt File for SEO

Optimizing your robots.txt for seo is quite simple, but you should follow the guidelines of google webmasters. Google advises users not to use robots.txt file to hide low quality contents on your website like category, date and other archive pages.

WordPress plugins that you use to add meta tags and descriptions for your contents can be used to manage and optimize the seo by adding nofollow and noindex to archive pages.

Other files are login page, registration pages already have the nofollow and noindex tags, so you don’t need to add them in your robots.txt.

It is recommended to you to add disallow to the followings:

Why this files are disallowed?

This files can be used by a hacker or someone who is running a malicious query to locate websites that are running a specific version, only disallowing will protect you as it won’t show up on search results.

Plugins folder is recommended to disallow as someone can find sites having a particular plugin which are vulnerable and can be exploited.

Adding Your XML Sitemap to Robots.txt File

If you are using any plugins for creating XML Sitemaps then those sitemaps will not be added to your robots.txt. You should add your sitemap URL in your robots.txt, by doing this you make sure that the search bots can find all the urls of your blog that it needs to index.

Adding your XML Sitemap in robots.txt can help your site get index if for any reason you forgot to add your sitemap in your webmasters tools.

What Does an Ideal Robots.txt File Should Look Like?

For every website the robots.txt file differs.

Here is another example of a robots.txt file, this time it is the one we use here on SmartActiveBlogger:

That’s it for your robots.txt

Is My Content Affected By New Robots.txt File?

Well after doing all those changes you should atleast know if your contents were affected or not. And to check that we have a fantastic tool in Google webmasters known as Fetch as Google located at Crawl > Fetch as Google.

In Fetch as Google tab, add any link of your post and test it by clicking fetch and render. The tool will let you know about the bot type and the status.

You can also check the effect of robots.txt by visiting the robots.txt tester in the webmasters which is located under Crawl > Robots.txt Tester. You just need to add any link from your blog that you want to test if the bot has access to it or not, just click the test button and you will find the status.

That’s all. We hope this article helped you learn how to optimize your WordPress robots.txt file for SEO. You may also want to see our guide on 15 Best Ways To Increase Google Crawl Rate Of Your Website that you should definitely read.

15 Best Ways To Increase Google Crawl Rate Of Your Website

An important aspect of SEO is site crawl by bots and by regular and frequent visits by the crawler, it means Google appeals to your site and they love your site. Google crawl rate is the frequency with which Google bots visits your site and it vary to the type of your website and the content you publish and if bots can’t crawl your site efficiently, your many important pages and posts will not be indexed by Google and other search engines.

Note: You can’t force google bots to visit your site often and crawl, but you can request them to do so. Here’s a guide on How to index a website in 24 hours in google.

The best way to increase google crawl rate on your website is by having a good and proper navigation as it helps in deep crawling and indexing. This is the reason why News publishing website gets index so fast.

Google crawls and indexes your site by using bots and spiders, your site can only rank on search engine results page (SERP) if the bots and spiders have crawled and indexed it. Hence your website must have a good and regular crawl rate and you can make sure that your site indeed has a good site crawl rate by following the 15 ways to increase google crawl rate.

  1. Create and Update your Site contents regularly.
  2. Check your Server
  3. Pay attention to load time
  4. Fresh content and avoid duplication
  5. Use sitemaps
  6. Use Robots.txt
  7. Adjust crawl rate in Google
  8. Fetch as Google
  9. Interlink your web pages and posts
  10. Check links
  11. Optimize images
  12. Use ping services
  13. Unique Meta title and Tags
  14. Get more Social Shares
  15. Use SSL (https)

1. Create and Update your Site contents regularly

It is always said Content is King and it is the most important element for search engines. Google bots like to crawl those websites that are regularly updated and produce more fresh contents. There are several sites that produce contents on daily basis by creating blog posts, videos and podcasts.

If you don’t create contents on daily basis it is recommended that you provide fresh contents at least 3 times a week and which will dramatically increase google crawl rate.

If you don’t create fresh contents even weekly, we advise you to at least update old contents. Static sites are crawled less often than dynamic sites.

2. Check your Server

Always host your blog on good reliable servers, you don’t want that search bots to visit your site when your website is facing downtime or many times on a cheap hosting the website faces downtime when the crawler visits your site as the performance of cheap servers are of cheap quality.

If google search bots get downtime every time it visits your website then it will automatically set the crawl time and your new contents won’t be indexed faster. There are several hosting sites but we have listed the best web hosting sites for you.

3. Pay attention to load time

Google bots have a budget time for your blog and it will only spend that limited time to crawl your blog. If for any reason google bot takes the time to crawl your resources then there will be no time left to visit your other pages.

So it is always recommended to host your blog on a reliable server. We always recommend using Bluehost as we any several other top bloggers like Pat Flynn uses it.

4. Fresh content and avoid duplication

Always create new contents and try to avoid duplication as google hates Plagiarism. Google’s algorithm is smart enough to find duplicate contents on your blog and if it finds it may stop crawling your site or banning or lowering your site ranking.

Contents can be anything, it can be a video, blog posting or podcasts but you should always try to create fresh and relevant contents.

There are several ways to optimize your contents for search engine and increase google crawl rates but if you duplicate your contents all will be in vain.

5. Use sitemaps

Almost every blog has a sitemap and by creating a sitemap for your blog you can make sure that your site is discovered by search engine bots. Creating sitemaps is no brainer especially in WordPress.

Google XML Sitemap Plugin can generate dynamic sitemaps which you can submit to webmasters Tools.

6. Use Robots.txt

It’s dangerous and useless if search engine bots crawl pages that should not appear in search results like admin pages, folders where you store some files. So by creating a simple text file known as robots.txt which will help your stop bots from accessing and crawling those files.

Note: You can also stop bots from crawling affiliate links and outbound links.

7. Adjust crawl rate in Google

Increase Google Crawl Rate

You need to have a Google Webmasters Tools account to adjust the crawl rate and also monitor and optimize it. You can manually set the crawl rates and increase it. But I suggest you to only use this feature when you are facing some problems with google crawl bots or your site is not effectively crawled.

Note: Use it with Caution, Increasing the crawl rate can affect your site performance and face other issues.

8. Fetch as Google.

Google Webmasters Tool has a feature known as Fetch as Google. It helps you to test how  Google crawls or renders a URL on your site and check if Googlebot can access the page on your site.It also reports if any resources are blocked to Googlebot.

The main use of this feature is to simulate real-time crawl and render execution as done by google bots while crawling.

9. Interlink your web pages and posts

Interlinking is the way to pass link juice to your other post and pages also help you to achieve effective PageRank. Interlinking also helps the search engine bots to crawl deep pages of your site that would be ignored or missed by search bots.

The way you can interlink is when you write a new post, add a relevance link to an old post /page and then go to related old posts and add a link to your new post there.

By doing this you will help the search bots to effectively crawl deep pages on your site.

10. Check links

Interlinking is the way of allowing bots to crawl several pages when they make a visit to your site. If you have seen you will find several post links are broken in our post and pages, because that’s intentionally broken, we sometimes schedule our post for future release as the post are in the draft.

We use an editorial calendar, broken link checker, and content management sheets to know exactly which link is dead and which link points to where.

11. Optimize images

Many bloggers are using images and infographics is now a trend but the problem is that google is unable to read and understand images directly. The only way google can understand an image is by the “alt” tag.

If proper alt tags are added then your images will also appear in the search results. Alt tags ensure that images are optimized for SEO and you should also consider having a separate sitemap for images for better crawling and indexing of media files and images.

Unoptimized images may hamper your performance and they may also cause poor crawl rate. So it is always recommended to optimize images for SEO.

12. Use ping services

The best way to let bots and crawlers know when your site gets updated or new contents is published is by pinging. WordPress has its own pinging feature integrated and you can ping google manually and automatic.

You can manually ping google by using services like pingomatic. And if you want WordPress to ping automatically then you can add more ping sites to your WordPress so that several bots gets notified.

You can find such list at Best WordPress Ping List for your Blog

13. Unique Meta title and Tags

Make sure you have a unique and relevant title and meta tags for each of your pages and blog post. Meta title and tags help your post stand out of the crowd and also the tags helps search engine and bots to identify the post type and help in increasing the google crawl rate.

Google search uses keywords and tags for SERP and also for indexing posts and pages and avoid duplicate contents.

14. Get more Social Shares

Although google maintains that social shares are not a ranking factor but you can use social shares for another benefit. Since google bots crawl social sites regularly, your chances to get crawled by bots are more often.

Social shares can turn bots to boom your site by crawling. If your post gets 100 social shares it means you have created 100 points to get your site visited by bots to be crawled.

15. Use SSL (https)

Google has announced that using HTTPS and adding a SSL 2048-bit key certificate on your site will give you a minor ranking boost. To be said it is a minor change and will give the website a small ranking benefit but adding small ranking factors will definitely help you outrank your competitors. In their blog post, google has said that SSL has an impact on “fewer than 1% of global queries” but they also mentioned that they may strengthen the signal because Google wants to keep everyone safe on the web.

How to Get Free SSL for your Blog.

Conclusion

Its upto Google either it want to crawl and index your site or not you can just request the Googlebot to crawl your site. Since GoogleBot crawls most of the websites that are legit, this methods listed above will definitely help you increase your crawl rate.

Google XML Sitemap plugin automatically generates a sitemap for your blog and also provides some options to be tweaked in the sitemap. The plugin does everything for you and updates your sitemap after each new piece of content you publish.

Pro tip: submit the sitemap URL to Google via Google Search Console.

The Google XML Sitemaps plugin does everything right, all in an easy to understand and efficient manner. You couldn’t ask for anything more from a sitemap creation tool.

4. Broken Link Checker

As you create more and more contents, you will find hard to maintain your blog and old URLs in your blog content can end up with 404 error.

This is where Broken Link Checker plugin comes handy.

The plugin will automatically scan your entire blog and the contents and will alert you if it found any broken links. If you are lucky, you’ll never be alerted of any broken links.

Some of the top features of Broken Link Checker are:

  • Monitor links in post, pages, comments, custom post and custom fields
  • Checks if any link doesn’t work
  • Decorate broken links a different appearance
  • Prevent search engines to follow broken links.

Broken-Links-Checker

Google doesn’t just rank any website for its content or the SEO strategy it uses. It also checks other aspects of your blog and broken links will hamper your performance in search results and impact on user experience.

The plugin is simple to use but it is very powerful and handy. At the time of writing this post, it has 500,000+ installs and a rating of 4.1 out of 5.

5. SEO Optimized Images

Many writers and bloggers forget to optimize their images and they caught up in optimizing your content. Optimizing your images will improve your rankings, while it also helps drive traffic through Google search.

SEO optimized images plugin will insert Seo Friendly alt and title attributes into every image. You can upload and add images to post and pages but its really hard to optimize each and every image for optimal performance.

If you want to avoid any image-related SEO mistakes then be sure to use this plugin

The Short Link is the shortened link that you want your visitors to see which you redirect to target url.

In the next section, the replacement feature is located. The plugin provides two different types of replacements. The first one is URL replacement and the other is keywords replacement. URL replacement is meant for those who wants to replace any old url with the new short link. This feature is quite helpful if your old affiliate links are broken or outdated and you can’t manually fix them.

Keyword replacement is the main thing and the reason this article is written. You can list several keywords, one in each text field. The plugin will automatically replace the plain text keywords in post and pages and will automatically add affiliate links to keywords that you listed.

f you have a lot of the same keyword mentioned in one post, then things can get out of hands. That is why we just set 3 links for each keyword in a post or page which is located in the Advanced tab for each link you add. It avoids your post and pages from turning into SPAM.
